Welcome,
As the new year begins, I am reflecting on a discussion about “savouring the moment”. I feel we all need to do this. Our lives are made up of “moments” and many a time we are not fully engaging in them. We have our thoughts on past happenings or future expectations and what we hope will happen or what we need to do.
We see people taking photos of a fabulous sunset without them really pausing and watching it with their naked eyes and having moments of awe in the changing colours and intensity.
At one time I was staying with my son Jamie in Margaret River, Western Australia and we ventured down to the magnificent coastline to see if we could watch a great sunset. Initially we were disappointed and then suddenly the horizon lit up with a glorious display. Being a professional photographer Jamie captured some magical pictures. I requested a laminated copy of the sunset, not only because it was stunning but as we had watched it together. I have it up on my wall and each time I look at it I remember those special moments we shared.
I still savour the moments I had during an unplanned experience when I became the token sponsor on America’s yacht during the Sponsors Race in the World Cup for yachting at the end of 1986 (so long ago) in Fremantle. The crew also represented America in the America’s Cup which was held in Fremantle soon afterwards. Their boat was without a sponsor shortly before the race and I happened to be on the nearby Press launch and was roped in, needing to be taken to the yacht in a rubber duckie during pre-race manoeuvres, and having to scramble aboard in a very undignified way. I needed to sit very still and make sure I didn’t get hit by the boom when they tacked. It was a huge thrill to be amongst the world’s top sailors, even if it wasn’t a serious race.
I am sure you too have had many wonderful moments you recall. This is what helps our lives be rich and meaningful. It is not always the big events that shape us.
So, as we commence another year, place your attention on these little moments of joy which I am sure you have had and will have.
It is healthier to focus, with gratitude, on our blessings and send our love and hopes for peace and harmony in a kinder world in 2024.
Much love,
Merriene
