Jailhouse Rock and Musical Memories

by | July 2024 | Personal Growth, Wisdom

Welcome,

Every morning on awakening, and still lying in bed, I enjoy listening to bird song announcing the arrival of a new day. It is lovely to hear Kookaburras laughing, or other birds expressing their individual tunes.

One morning, while still in bed, after turning on my little bedside radio, I was thrilled to be greeted by the sound of Elvis Presley singing “Jailhouse Rock”. It was a blast from the past for me after not hearing it for so long. I was surprised by how emotional I became – being transported back to 1957 (yes – such a long time ago!) when it was first released. It was so uplifting to hear those strong vocals and wonderful instrumentals that were new to us (early) teenagers in that era.

At the time of its release, it brought a shift and upliftment to our musical diet that, until that time had been fairly “tame” by comparison. It was a portal into a “new beginning”. I have discovered Queen’s wonderful 1980’s song “This Crazy Little Thing Called Love” was influenced by “Jailhouse Rock”. There was nostalgia at the time for music of the 1950’s.

Do you too have memories from long ago that have been triggered by hearing a certain song or some other experience? Life seems to be full of them and I was really excited that particular morning to have felt such a heartfelt response.

In my experiences it was the 1960’s with the music of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones along with the radical fashion change, with the mini skirt and bright colours becoming all the rage that was a fabulous new beginning for all of us young ones wishing to express our creativity and individuality in that era. Each era of bright young people put their own creativity into place as they search for the new.

Embrace your own valuable memories and have joy in continuing to celebrate them.

The 1960’s was a particularly exciting time for me – by association – as my brother was in the Australian Cricket team and he was spending a lot of time playing Test Cricket against England in England then – (1961,1964, and 1968) where the team members were treated as celebrities, mixing with the Beatles, Royalty etc. He had a most talented girlfriend who was Fashion Editor of English Vogue magazine, and I scored the latest fashion items from her. (She later became a most distinguished Costume Designer in the movies).

I also had sent back to me sought after copies of long – playing vinyl records (remember them?) of musicals such as “Oliver” and “My Fair Lady” before they were available here in Perth. It was a momentous time of shaping my musical appreciation and being able to share it with others.

I do hope you too can draw on many happy times in your life to sustain you in these times of uncertainty and change. Stay strong and have fun!

Many blessings and much love,

Merriene
